Blake Island

The
second weekend of October came as a complete enigma as we were
greeted with gorgeous weather. Needless to say, we took full
advantage of it. After a great day on Saturday climbing Red
Mountain with Wendell, I got together with my new kayak friends for
a paddle. The plan was something mellow, but the ever
adventurous Pete had other plans. We decided to leave from
West Seattle and essentially cross the Puget Sound to Blake Island,
a State Park. There is no ferry service to Blake Island.
Only tour operators, private boaters and kayakers make the crossing
over. Blake Island was made somewhat famous back in 1993, when
then President Clinton along with the APEC summit members convened
there to attend a Native American-style salmon at the Tillicum
Village.
The trip was not without its challenges. The morning crossing was plagued with fog - we had to take a compass bearing just to find it. In addition, there was a lot of ferry, barge and tanker traffic kicking up swells. It made for a fun ride. The afternoon paddle back was relaxing and uneventful. |
