We started out our weekend with rain and low clouds making the trail a muddy challenge.  I recall one of Thomas' comments, "We could have not picked a worse trail for this weather".  It was true - the trail was badly rutted and overgrown.  As our bodies parted the thick underbrush, there was a carwash effect ensuring that every part of our bodies got wet.  Finally we made it out of the forest and into the upper meadows.  Poor visibility caused us to veer off-trail for a ways, but was soon corrected.  A final push and we were at the high camp.  The transition from forest meadows to glacial terrain was almost instant.

Summit day was greeted with mild warm winds and clear skies.  We started late at 5:20am and made our way across the Sulphide glacier.  We ran into troubles at the summit pyramid realizing that the snow in the gully was going to be too advanced for some members in our group.  The only alternate would be the SE ridge which goes at 5.5.  Realizing the error, we gave up the summit for another time.  It was a beautiful weekend.

Start to a lousy rainy day.

Lonny and Sascha sporting ponchos to try and stay dry.

The upper meadows were 'plagued' with tiny little toads. We were careful not step on them.

Our co-leader Lonny is about to take us down the wrong path in the heavy fog!

Camp at 6,300'. The weather is much nicer up here. We actually can dry out our clothes before tomorrow's summit attempt.

Sunset views from camp are awesome.

5:20am start - a little later than expected, but it worked out nicely.

Sunrise came quickly.

Views of the Sulphide Glacier.

More views.

Wendy taking a break.

Sascha with Mt. Baker in back.

Shuksan's summit pyramid. It was daunting to consider, but we were willing to try.

Thomas, Joanne and Martina prepare for the final summit push.

We traverse to the gully's right ridge and find 5th class rock. The problem was that our ropes were thin as clothsline and we had no pro.

The 'walk of shame' back down the glacier after failing to secure the summit.

One last look back.

Thomas and Lonny enjoy a clear day on the way down.

The forest trail is covered with bushes of plump raspberries, salmonberries and blueberries.
